WOW! This coat saved us. My husband and I both purchased the jacket the day before a 6.7 mile hike up Mt. LeConte, after we found out we would be facing rain. On our hike up, we used only the outer waterproof jacket. We were very comfortable and dry when we reached the summit. The next morning was rainer, cooler and quite windy. On the way down the mountain that day, we used both the inner liner and the outer waterproof jacket and it was perfect. We both were quite comfortable, did not get over-heated and the only clothing wet at the end of our hike was the lower portion of our slacks. Thank you NorthFace and thank you Nantahala Outdoor Center for recommending this jacket to us!!

Unlike the previous reviews, this an actual cold weather review.

I haven't had a chance to take this jacket out skiing yet, but the general walking around tests aren't good.

At 12 degrees Fahrenheit, with negative windchill, this jacket is simply not warm. The Thermoball insulation is only present in the chest, and there is next to no insulation in the sleeves. This results in the equivalent of walking around with an insulated vest on and nothing else. Columbia equivalents at this price range keep me warm at these temps.

This jacket is probably fine for skiing at 20 degrees Fahrenheit, but I won't be keeping it, as it's too disappointing for the money. It's more of an over glorified rain jacket, that runs a bit small.

          My favorite coat

          By

          from Oklahoma

Comments about The North Face Thermoball Triclimate Ski Jacket Men's, Urban Navy Heather, XXL:

I bought this coat about two years ago and I love it. It is very versatile. Even with the liner in, it has a light feel. It will not by itself keep you warm in sub-zero temperatures. However, the coat is light and roomy enough that you can wear extra layers underneath without it feeling uncomfortable. The outer layer is windproof and water proof, so it is good in the rain or on a cold and windy day. I have worn it a few times for skydiving when it was extremely cold at altitude. Importantly, it feels roomy and light and does not restrict range of motion. It also packs fairly small into a backpack and makes a great pillow on a long flight.

          By

          from New York City, NY

Comments about The North Face Thermoball Triclimate Ski Jacket Men's, Urban Navy Heather, XXL:

It fits really well and it looks really good but it doesn't keep me warm when the weather is around 30 degree. The hood on the jacket is not insulated so I had to wear a beanie when it gets really cold. The front pockets are also not insulated so during the cold weather I had to wear gloves to keep my hands warm.

Comments about The North Face Thermoball Triclimate Ski Jacket Men's, Urban Navy Heather, XXL:

This is arguably TNFs cleanest looking jacket and largely why I chose it over the Triclimate Snow version. It is the fifth TNF coat/jacket I've owned. It fits very well and is not bulky - another reason I chose this jacket over other cold weather coats. There are mixed reviews in regards to warmth of this jacket so I was optimistic that perhaps some reviewers were overly critical. Ultimately, I found the jacket to have a paucity of features given the price point, and it is not warm much below 30 degrees. I bought this for the dual purpose of a ski jacket and a coat to wear in Chicago winters. It would suffice as a ski jacket with base layers underneath, however it was not warm enough for my relatively short walk to work at ~20F. For reasons unclear, this website ranks it among its warmest jackets in the 'Benefit Ratings.' In addition to the lack of warmth, the coat has precisely zero features beyond the zip-out liner. For $50 more one could buy the 'Snow' version of the Triclimate Snowball and get 1. lined pockets, 2. two breast pockets, 3. goggle wipe, 4. heavier liner, 5. internal pocket and 6. a powder skirt. I would have at least considered keeping this coat if it came with lined pockets (or a free pair of gloves), or if it were much cheaper. I could not have been more disappointed in a coat touted as "warmest."

            Best Uses

Comments about The North Face Thermoball Triclimate Ski Jacket Men's, Urban Navy Heather, XXL:

I'm in Georgia and wanted something that would be good for 3 seasons - as winters usually only get 1-2 days of snow.

First the fit: it runs big.
              I'm 5'11" and 150lbs, 32" waist and 38" chest.
I initially bought a medium and it was huge - like a L or XL type of fit.
I exchanged it for a small.
Yes, size SM, and it fits perfect - even the elastic cuffs aren't too tight.

The inner thermoball liner jacket feels well, cheap.
It feels very thin, and the sleeves are plain, with only the quilting on the vest section.
Not as quality as the full thermoball jackets that are sold separately.

The shell has a PU type of coating on the inside of it.

The zippers on both parts feel thin / cheap, so we will see how it holds up.
There are no inner pockets on either the shell or the thermoball liner jacket.

As for weather - the jacket feels great in weather between 20-30 degrees.
The shell is completely WINDPROOF and the outer surface of it will eventually absorb some of the cold from the air, but the insulating thermoball layer keeps you cozy.

There are some nice touches to this jacket - mainly how the collar has little fleece corners to cover up the zippers and keep you from getting some annoying face rub / abrasions.

I also like how the thermoball liner jacket has some snaps at the cuffs to secure it to the shell cuffs so that the jackets stay together when you take it on and off.

If the liner were thicker / better / like regular thermoball and the zippers and snaps were more durable / sturdy then I would give this jacket a higher rating. I would also like to see an inner pocket or two.

Overall I'm still pleased with the jacket for the price.

Comments about The North Face Thermoball Triclimate Ski Jacket Men's, Urban Navy Heather, XXL:

This is my 3rd North Face winter jacket and regrettably will be my last. I bought my first jacket over ten years ago and it is still the best one. The second was about the same price but noticeably less quality. This one is more expensive than the previous two but made with cheaper, less quality materials and missing previously included features.

I live in the northeast and you need gear that is going to be tough and keeps you warm and dry. This jacket doesn't protect from the elements well. It doesn't ventilate well. It doesn't have as many adjustments as previous models. Most importantly, it doesn't keep you warm in cold weather.

North Face has become a lifestyle brand where they were once for legitimate outdoor use. They cut every conceivable corner with their products and still charge a premium. Brands like Marmot or even Columbia are better than what The North Face is now. The quality of my first North Face winter jacket was comparable to brands such as Patagonia or Arc'teryx. I'm disappointed in what they have become.

This is a very good jacket. The outer shell is great as a stand alone windbreaker/rainjacket and the inner jacketis extremly warm. Together it's a perfect winter jacket. I'm planning on taking it to Iceland and am not worried that it won't holdup while hiking. Well worth the price. Also, the falcon brown color is awesome, it's my favorite brown/tan I've seen.

Comments about The North Face Thermoball Triclimate Ski Jacket Men's, Urban Navy Heather, XXL:

Have only had this a few weeks but just in time for some rather cold temperatures that has moved in. With sub zero weather coat was quite comfortable with proper base layers. Even when driving coat is light weight and non restrictive.

I'm outdoors all year. This is a great lightweight, warm, and waterproof jacket. Packing this jacket is very easy due to its compact ability. I recommend this for and outdoorsman who likes to stay warm and dry.

Stopped to buy gas on my way to the N.Y. boarder with Canada it was -17 without the wind. My old jacket wasn't cutting it. Stopped at Dicks in Watertown N.Y. and told the man there that I wanted the warmest jacket they had. He gave me the Triclimate. Over the next three days I was outside for several hours each day and the jacket kept me very warm. Worth every dollar. That thermo ball liner is surprising light for the amount of warmth it achieves. The outer shell keeps the wind out. Great product. Found it hot when the temp went up to 30 degrees.
