Awesome bag. Used as a carry on for my trips with no issues. However it does take most of the storage in the overhead compartment. The back pack straps are a good idea but with a heavy load (50-70) pounds is a little rough on the shoulders. The straps need a little more cushion. But with a lighter load they work just fine. The material that the bag is made of reminds me of wrestling mat material and feels like a very durable material.

I bought this bag 10 days ago, took it on one flight, and it already has a rip in it! Poor quality! I bought it to easily carry around as I like the look of the bag and the idea of using it as a backpack in lieu of a shoulder strap for a duffel bag. It is just not made well. It gets scuffles and black marks easily and obviously the quality is not there if it cannot even make it through one US flight without the material ripping. Poor quality for a company like The North Face. Now I have to waste my time to drive 40 minutes to return it because I'm not keeping this bag.

I bought this duffel to travel around Europe and it was absolutely fantastic. I've owned it for one year now and have used it in my travels all across North American and Europe. I throw this bag all over over, in every imaginable condition and I never have to worry. It's has a very high built quality, all the components still work perfectly. If you pack it efficiently and use the compression straps, then you can use it as carry-on luggage. It's tough, spacious and perfect for everything I do.

I bought my back 5 days ago, I was quite excited to use it, as it looked like it will work perfectly for my needs ( safety) (zip to my back) but as soon as a packed the bag and tried it out to feel the weight on my back. I started noticing that it is pulling apart slowly at the seams where the straps attach. Now my flight is tomorrow, and I'm not sure if it will survive it. I cannot decide whether to buy another bag or to give it a chance but then arrive on the other side, stuck, with a torn and useless bag

      Love the re-design, well done!!!

Great job on removing those floppy duffel carry handles. All they ever did was get in the way and snag on my elbows while trying to put my arms through the backpack straps. The new low profile quick grab handles are a MUCH better design!

I really think the bag is high quality but lacking some things I really dont understand why they are missing such as a the ability to lock the bag or normal carry straps. Otherwise great bag. I probably wouldnt buy another unless it had what its currently missing though

This may be controversial but I absolutely love the new design and actually prefer it over the older design. The handles on the side of the bag just below the zip are, in my mind, an excellent replacement for the traditional bulky handles. I see a lot of criticism for the new design but I would encourage everyone to try the new version first. It's sleeker, stylish and far more practical. Well done North Face. I've already bought 4 of these bags as gifts for family.

I've used this bag for over a year now for day to day use while flying in the Arctic. It's held up very well to the abuse of being tossed around in the gravel, snow and ice. Plenty of space for all my survival gear (Axe, tarp shelter, stove, dehydrated meals, ski googles, sat tracker, fire starter.. etc) lunch, small thermos, and a change of clothes. I've also taken it on snow shoe hikes, fishing and, used it as a gear bag while winter camping. The shoulder straps are comfortable but its not really ment for an extended hike. The compression straps work well to minimize the bag to carry on size. I also have the duffel in size large to carry gear for month long flight postings in remote camps.

I've used bags from Gregory and MEC, but this TNF bag is by far one of the best pieces of gear I own.

The bag was perfect in all ways except... it has a shiny GOLD interior. This is not stated anywhere in the description. For such a bold (i.e. tacky) color choice, this should be shown in the pictures.

North Face Base Camp Duffle Small
I've had this bag for longer than I can remember, I bought it back when I was in the Navy out in VA and it's been my go to bag for everything since I've had it…
One of its functions over the years has been my motorcycle bag for the several different bikes l've had and it was usually held on by a bungie cord most of the time. Well since bungie cords sometimes tend to let go when you least expect, especially when in a hurry to get to work, the bag has rolled down the highway a few times. Twice before I noticed the moment it let go and was off the throttle right away and able to run back to grab it with nothing more than dirt and a few scuff marks to show for its 60+ mph tumble down the road… This last time I wasn't so lucky…. 0450 I get to work, reach back for my bag and it's gone!!! My stomach dropped… I hopped on the bike and raced back to get it…. This time when I'd gotten to the bag it had been run over, possibly more than once, even though it's bright yellow!?!? My lunch bag and all its contents had exploded inside the bag and my favorite coffee mug was flattened and shrapnel of all its parts were floating around with my extra riding gloves… With liquid dripping out I strapped it back on the bike and headed off to work… No coffee for me that morning…
That night I get home and after a good rinse and a run through the washing machine it's still usable!!! List of its injuries: Two of the plastic cinch buckles broke, one for a shoulder strap the other for one of the cinch straps, the plastic key there's a small hole in the bottom along a seam that let go, next to a cut in the black Cardura, not all the way through the bag, but this "is" where the metal coffee cup was flattened in its defense, a few more scuff marks and a couple oil stains that didn't come out in the wash…
All in all y'all make a very tough bag!!!
                    Thanks!
                    Todd

Great material but doesn't fulfill the purpose if you are looking for a duffle bag. It turns out that the only option to carry this bag is as a backpack. No option to carry it over the shoulder or just by hand like you would do with a normal duffle bag.

Most disappointed in this duffle. On the second airline trip, the end of the bag had 4 tears down to the mesh lining. So much for indestructible. While I'm a big North Face fan, this is definitely not the quality I've come to expect.

By changing the design they have ruined otherwise an almost perfect bag. There is no strap to carry it on your shoulder. There are no holes to attach a padlock. TNF - what have you done?

This bag is extremely well made, material and stitching. Can't say enough how well-made it is. Perfect size also for carry-on. Easily can be used for a week trip.

So the downsides? It is missing a shoulder strap and also middle handle. I know they redesigned this bag, but those are really big misses now. Very bulky to handle through an airport without the shoulder strap or middle handle to quickly grab and go. Because of this I opted out of this bag for recent travel. I instead went with Best American Duffel 3.0 bag and it is better made, American made, and extremely user friendly in all regards. Better cinch straps, arguably better bag material also. Check that bag out as part of your choice considerations. It is not 100% waterproof, but though will likely last a lifetime. North Face needs to bring back the shoulder strap and middle strap for this size of bag. Once they do, it will be hard not to reconsider.

I have owned many NF duffels and the small base camp bags are fantastic. Unfortunately as you get into the larger bags the materials don't get any stronger, and because of this tearing is common. I have had two of the 95L bags and both have ripped when transporting on international flights. I do a lot of global flying and a durable bag is a must.
