Cushioning

Style: 1016723

Comfort doesn't have to weigh you down, you can put on the HOKA One One Clifton 4 Running Shoes and get bottomless cushion from the meaty EVA midsole underfoot. Just like every HOKA shoe, this one has Meta-Rocker profiling, which puts a transition zone behind your metatarsals. This rolls you forward in your stride, delivering surprising speed, and allows most of your weight to rest at midfoot. That means you'll be able to enjoy the stability-enhancing effects of the flat-waisted geometry, designed to give you a wide platform for every step.

KEY FEATURES
  • Early Stage Meta-Rocker helps you quickly move forward in your stride, giving you a noticeable boost in speed
  • Extra-thick EVA midsole provides bottomless cushion for every step
  • Open Engineered Mesh allows for maximum ventilation and support

I'm 48, about 5'10" and 190 lbs and usually do about a 7:30 mile. As far as shoes, I choose them based on comfort and I like the to fit fairly snug around my entire foot with a good pair of cushy running socks. I'm a size 9.5 in street shoes (usually Sketchers) and am a 9.5 in the Hokas as well.

Every spring I head to the store and try on about 10 different shoes, choosing the most comfortable one. Two years ago I saw the Hokas on a specialty running store shelf and after getting over the marshmallow-like heel, I tried on a pair. I walked out of the store with my first pair and never looked back.

Also, I have had a sore achilles for a while, even after doing the exercises recommended by my physical therapist. Those helped, but running in the Hoka's the pain went away almost completely.

Now my son runs high school cross-country with them and has had great luck with them as well. For a runner like myself, I can't recommend them highly enough!

I am a masters +50 sprinter with foot problems and the Hoka Clifton essentially saved my feet. I train nearly exclusively on the track, (except for occasional hills and stadium stairs) and it's a big part of my life. (I have won 5 USATF 400m Masters National Titles and one World Masters Championship in my age group). The Clifton 1 was a revelation, it had the incredible combination of flexibility, light weight, and cushion. Each successive version of the Clifton has gotten progressively worse. The Clifton 4 is the worst. Stiff, heavy, even more narrow than the Clifton 3. I thought the new Napali would be a good option but it's actually 2mm narrower than the Clifton 3, so I sent back both the Clifton 4 and the Napali, and I just purchased my 4th! pair of Clifton 3s while I still could. I don't understand why the entire world is screaming at Hoka to reissue the Clifton 1... but apparently they broke the mould. Their new Elevon... same deal, stiff, not as light, etc... i've even heard some reviewers compare the Clifton 1 to the high tech Nike Vapor 4% ($250 !). What is Hoka's problem? Why don't they give their customers what they want? They keep searching for a magic bullet with new designs when they struck gold years ago with the Clifton 1. The Clifton 3 is the best Clifton you can still get, but it's still no Clifton 1.

This shoe is perfect for me. I run cross country and spend lots of time in running shoes. These are a different feel than most other shoes. They provide lots of cushion and they are great for slight pronation. I'm on my forth pair and I haven't found a shoe that I like better.

Cushioning and arch adequate but toe was too narrow and insole in left shoe was narrow and poking into sole of the foot. Disappointed. Put in a wider insole that I bought and hoping this will work

This review is for the wide C4. For those of you that ran in the original Conquest and loved it … this shoe is pretty darn close to it! Its not the smooshy marshmallow Clifton of the past. I always felt like I wasn't getting much energy return out of all the previous Clifton's and never could get completely on board with those shoes. The fit is much better too - way back when HOO offered their shoes in half sizes up to 13.5 … BOOM! So, now the question will be: how bad will HOO change this shoe with the next gen? I hope not at all, b/c HOKA is finally working for this boy again :)

Had the HOKA's 7 months and both large toes are now poking through the shoes. These are my 7th pair of HOKA's since I am a marathon runner but disappointed with this model. I tell all my friends to go to HOKA's but I may have spoken too soon.

Way different than the 3's. Stop changing the shoes so much. I went through three pairs of the 3's and loved them. The 4 is stiff and brutalized my calves and knees. You did the same thing to the Bondi line. The 4 was great and you ruined it with the 5. I'm gonna have to drive an hour away to return these shoes. I'm about to give up on Hoka. We find a version that works for us and you always decide to change it, then stop making that previous version.

                      Bottoms falling apart after 150miles

                      By

                      from East TN

Bought for son, after 40 days I flipped them over and the bottom is falling apart and the dark gray parts on the edge have worn away and the soft cushy part is completely exposed and shredding. Approx 150miles worth in the shoes and they shouldn't be falling apart like this. All other Hoka shoes (and we are new, so we've only had a few) have worn out over the top of the foot but the bottom has normal wear. And it would be 5months worth of daily running to look like they should just go in the trash..but never only a few days past a month. Running is on grass course most days, some track running. I returned to the store where I bought today in hopes of Hoka making it right. They sold me another pair just like it for now, to see what Hoka does with a promise to return for full refund in a couple weeks when Hoka fixes the issue (which they should). This Clifton 4 will not be on our continue to buy list.

Your update to the Clifton 4 is horrible. My first run in them was awful. I planned to give the shoes a few weeks to break in, but it took me a month because each time I ran in them it took we almost a week to build up the course to subject myself to this terrible shoe again. Did anyone on your design team actually run in these things before you went to make get with them? They are nothing like the 3's at all. The foot and calf pain these instruments of torture subject me to each time I run in them borders on inhumane.

This shoe immediately gave me hot spot pain on the top of my foot and the arch of my foot. THIS SHOE HAS EXTREMELY HIGH ARCHES. Also I felt like the bottom of the shoe was not as cushioned as I was expecting, felt VERY firm.

Because of a few reviews, I thought I would try a different Hoka running shoe, but that was my error. So, Clifton 4s again, and I could not be more pleased. Same fit and comfort of my 3s and 2s, same good fit, and same support to two reconstructed knees. After some treadmill miles just to be sure, I took these to the road and found them to be just almost perfect... the shoelaces could be a bit longer, about an inch would do it. But why haggle over such a good shoe.
