I noticed last years jacket wasn't insulated and all, so how much insulation is the 40g add, like is this jacket warm enough for just a t shirt and maybe thermals underneath it on mid winter days?

Well it depends! cold is different for everyone. If you are active and your body heat rises quickly 40 grams will be plenty. Pair it with a mid and base layer, if you get too hot remove the mid layer. Layering allows you to adjust to changes in temperature during the day/night.
