I have worn a variety of Smith Optics for the better part of 15 years because they are simple the best! I love my Serpicos and am about to buy another pair, but as some have already mentioned when the glasses are collapsed the ends of the bows/ear pieces strike the lenses. It has caused some serious scratches on my current pair I and will be taking precausions with the next pair. Would be nice if Smith could come up with a modification.

I love quite a lot about these glasses. Having 20/15 vision, I'm fussy about optical quality of lenses and these are great. Fit and the look are also big pluses. One critical problem, however, is that the ends of the earpieces have rubbed major scratches on the insides of the lenses, making them unusable for anything other than loafing outside. My other quality glasses have a stop on the hinge that prevents this.

Love the style and fit so much I bought them twice.....

By

from Shelbyville, KY 40065, USA

Comments about Smith Optics Smith Serpico Polarized Sunglasses, Gold/Polarized/Bronze, O/S:

But then my second pair developed the large scratches in the middle of the lens as quickly as my first pair had. The scratches are quite wide as far as lens damage goes, at least half an inch vertically and directly in my line of sight. The earpieces rub on the lenses when closed, make sure to check them brand new out of the box. The first pairs lenses popped out on occasion but that has not been an issue with the second pair so far. They fit so well and look great but they are quickly reduced to junk glasses good for nothing but yard work. Full disclosure I was a sales manager for a large high end outdoor retailer for eight years. The non-hunting optics were one of my areas so i have sold hundreds of pairs of glasses and personally own 15 plus pairs of top line models from various brands. They were all either bought at significant employee discount (both pairs of Serpicos) or free as incentives from sales or training contests. So all that being said Smith makes some really nice stuff but I will hesitate to purchase or recommend them again.

Perfect for driving

By

from Seattle

Comments about Smith Optics Smith Serpico Polarized Sunglasses, Gold/Polarized/Bronze, O/S:

I love these in non-polarized for driving as they fit awesome and are super lightweight. Also the side coverage is way way better than Ray-Bans. I choose non-polarized for driving so that my digital gauges and mirrors don't get all funky. I like that they are light weight, but like all metal framed glasses they are pretty fragile. I've had to replace these twice, each after boat party weekends. Don't sit on them!

Lightweight, Comfortable, Awesome Lenses

Living in the Pacific Northwest I drive in a lot of rain, the lenses on these glasses are a great help. Helps that they're also super comfortable and stylish.

Good product, but some annoying design issues.

By

from Denver, CO, USA

Comments about Smith Optics Smith Serpico Polarized Sunglasses, Gold/Polarized/Bronze, O/S:

I like the size and design of the frame and the nose pads to help keep the bottom of the frame off my cheeks; however, the nose pads have to be constantly adjusted to keep them off my cheeks. More importantly, when the frame temples are folded to store the glasses, the end of the temples make contact w/ the inside of the lenses and scratch/mar the inside surface of both lenses.

Love these sunglasses

Comments about Smith Optics Smith Serpico Polarized Sunglasses, Gold/Polarized/Bronze, O/S:

This is my third pair of these sunglasses. I love them, but they seem to break easily. The first pair was replaced by Smith, but the second pair was broken due to my own fault. Still keep going back to them!

Comments about Smith Optics Smith Serpico Polarized Sunglasses, Gold/Polarized/Bronze, O/S:

This is the only pair of aviators I have seen that you can wear on bike ride and your eyes won't water. I love the simple style of aviator and how light weight they are. These glasses are dope!

Comments about Smith Optics Smith Serpico Polarized Sunglasses, Gold/Polarized/Bronze, O/S:

This is the second pair I have purchased for my husband. The first pair was run over by a four wheeler. The lenses were perfect, the frame just didn't make it. We are a smith family for life. Love all their products!!!

Comfortable glasses with great customer service.

By

from Pennsylvania, USA

Comments about Smith Optics Smith Serpico Polarized Sunglasses, Gold/Polarized/Bronze, O/S:

I purchased these sunglasses about a year ago and have worn them almost daily since. Lightweight and comfortable, I usually forget I have them on. A few weeks ago one of the lenses developed an issue (coating started to come off). A quick email to Smith and they took care of it. I’ll stick with Smith for their warranty and great customer service. Note: I originally bought the "slim" model because I have a somewhat slender face, but they were too small...the regular model fits perfectly.

Comments about Smith Optics Smith Serpico Polarized Sunglasses, Gold/Polarized/Bronze, O/S:

Great set of glasses! They are slim fitted and cover your eyes very well! I am a pilot and I have never found a set of glasses that fit under my headset so well!! Yet they still feel "roomy". I liked my them so much I bought a second set in another color. I will probably be buying a third set because my wife always steals mine!!

Great, but...

By

from Houston, TX

Comments about Smith Optics Smith Serpico Polarized Sunglasses, Gold/Polarized/Bronze, O/S:

I LOVE these shades and get a lot of compliments. I have had this one pair of Serpicos for MANY years. I wear them constantly, but I also store them in an hard case (provided by another manufacturer). They are folded (in the case) but I do not have the scratches others mention. In fact, I have almost no scratches. My complaint is the inside of the lens coating is disintegrating; most visiblely along the edges. The rest of the lens appears to have little pox marks, which is what I can only assume is the rest of the coating breaking down? Either way, it is obstructing my view and has become annoying enough to where I want a new pair. The frames I have are a bit flimsy and had to be tightened many times over the years. I am hoping the frames have not become thinner over the years.

Great looking but poor design

By

from Tucson, AZ, USA

Comments about Smith Optics Smith Serpico Polarized Sunglasses, Gold/Polarized/Bronze, O/S:

These glasses have a major design flaw. When folded, the earpieces touch the inside of the lenses and scratch them. The hinges also loosen easily which only contributes to this issue. They do not come with a hard case, which would help prevent this. Only way to keep these in good condition is storing them in a hard case with a lens cloth between the lenses and earpieces. Even so, I have been vigilant about this (after getting a new pair through the warranty) and they are still scratched up.

Nice frames!

By

from Los Angeles, CA, USA

Comments about Smith Optics Smith Serpico Polarized Sunglasses, Gold/Polarized/Bronze, O/S:

Comfortable, good looking glasses! Like others stated, the earpiece will hit the lenses when folded, so I leave mine open most of the time. I like the curved lenses quite a bit more than I originally thought I would. Nice coverage without distortion. The frames do feel a bit flimsy, but they are very light and so far, so good!

great value

Comments about Smith Optics Smith Serpico Polarized Sunglasses, Gold/Polarized/Bronze, O/S:

I am a construction professional and wear my glasses fron sun up to sundown. I perchased my glasses in 2007, i am working on my 2nd pair. Mine don't have scratches from the earpieces because i leave them open on the dashboard when not in use, i have put them through everything imaginable (except my wife's purse) and they have held up beautifully. I only wish they were Z87 rated, they keep dust out of my eyes but i worry how they would take a heavy impact.

These sunglasses are awesome. The fit is great, and the quality is definitely worth the price. I really enjoy having the wrap around style in conjunction with an aviator type of sunglasses.

Looks great, but delicate

By

from Bend, OR

Comments about Smith Optics Smith Serpico Polarized Sunglasses, Gold/Polarized/Bronze, O/S:

I had the Serpico in gold for a little over a year. They look great and I liked the lenses. The sun glasses are light weight and the frames are a little flimsy because of it. I had to routinely tighten the hinge screw so the arms didn't come into contact with the inside of the lens (and scratch the lens, which happened). Today the frames finally broke at the hinge from being sat on. My fault, I know, but disappointing nonetheless. When I bought the sunglasses they came with a cleaning cloth pouch for storage. It's not a rigid case, like I had with a previous pair of Smith shades. Had I bought a separate rigid case for storage, my Serpico's would still be intact.

3.0

great design, poor lens quality

By

from Belle Haven, VA

Comments about Smith Optics Smith Serpico Polarized Sunglasses, Gold/Polarized/Bronze, O/S:

About a month after purchase I started noticing issues with the lenses. They had waves in them. I'm not sure if I just happened to purchase a faulty version of this product. Also I started noticing specks showing up on the outer lens which I have no idea why those started appearing. It is baffling that the lenses turned that way, especially for the price you pay for these, but I've not had any other issues with this product besides the lenses messing up on their own. I love the design, and for a cop it's a perfect and classic look. If you happen to be lucky and not get a pair that has faulty lenses, these glasses would be perfect for you. Also if you've got a full and round face or if you conduct traffic stops, these glasses are great. The design of these glasses demand authority!

Nice Sunglasses Poor Design

By

from Undisclosed

Comments about Smith Optics Smith Serpico Polarized Sunglasses, Gold/Polarized/Bronze, O/S:

These are nice sunglasses, but the ultimate failure is the hinge design. The hinge starts out ok, but after a few wears it loosens up, and is nearly impossible to get as tight as they were originally. This results in the sunglasses being scratched where the arms make contact with the lenses. There is no question of if this will happen, but when. This is a fairly common complaint about these sunglasses. It could be fixed with some kind of padding on the arms or a different hinge system.
