In comparing the Merlin jacket with the Clone jacket, how significant is the difference between the waterproofing and breathability in these two coats? Numbers for waterproofing and breathability are twice as high for the Clone. Would a boy wearing that coat (vs the Merlin) notice a big difference?

Waterproofing is a measure of the jacket's ability to resist water, a 5K rating will be good against rain but not ideal if sitting on or leaning against wet surfaces, the higher the number the better water proofing. Breathability represents how much perspiration vapor can escape through the jacket from the inside out, if he is going to be active and sweating a lot then you want a higher rating. This jacket seems to give an active boy the perfect combination of both ratings and he will be dry and warm this winter.

I am buying this jacket for a 9 year old boy, pretty average size. Do you recommend a size 10? Is this jacket 'short-waisted' like some ski jackets tend to be? thank you.

A size 10 sounds like it would be perfect for what you are looking for! The centerfront measures 20 3/4" and the centerback measures 25".

is this jacket 'short-waisted' and would a size 10 be the correct size for an average size (somewhat tall and thin) 9, almost 10, year old boy?
Question by heather

This jacket is not really short waist-ed but I would pay attention to the specific sizing chart because of your son's tall stature. You should keep in mind that his chest would be the measurement most important.

Good looking and keeps you warm

It's everything it claims to be. We use these for skiing. True sizing but I would buy one size up. Bought the Galaxy blue, colors are very nice. My son loves it and so do I. Little loop to attach ski pass would be nice, but it's ok.
