The North Face definitely tends to be true to size. Most people do not have difficulty with the fit for these.

This depends on the size, typically it is about 30.5 for a medium.

We are spring skiing in Colorado first week in April. Would these be good for that time of year? With an insulating layer underneath? What would you suggest for a beginner spring skiing, who probably won't do it again for a long time.

For skiing I recommend a shell pant with an insulating layer. A shell pant is very similar to a rain pant but more resistant to the elements.
