Q:
"This jacket is being advertised as a 3 layer jacket but after I saw it i could easily see the mesh lining that is used in 2 layer constructions. Also the white material underneath the mesh seems like the gore tex membrane. So, it looks like it is not a 3 layer but a 2 layer jacket after all. Or not?"

A:
"According to The North Face's specifications, this version of the Mountain Light is 3L. The construction that you are seeing with the mesh lining is the 3L construction. Also, keep in mind that the membrane side facing the mesh is hydrophobic so it won't be broken down by the oils in your skin from touching it, or snow, etc. In a 2L you would see a free-hanging liner; the difference being that the free-hanging liner inhibits breathability a little more than the 3L bonded version does. Coincidentally, The North Face used the 3L in the Triclimate version (probably to enhance breathability since you have that extra fabric from the removable layer) and the 2L in the non-Triclimate version (likely because without that additional barrier you don't need the extra breathability). This is very confusing! I hope this helps! "

"Can I use this jacket to practice ski or snowboarding? What do you recommend as pants to practice those sports? Thanks."

Question by Thiago Andrade on 12/8/2011 - 2:19 pm
A:
"You can definitely use this jacket for either skiing or snowboarding. In general you can ski in snowboard pants and snowboard in ski pants. Often snowboard pants have extra layers in the seat in knees, since many people sit to puton bindings, and fall onto their knees. Ski pants usually have extra fabric on the inside to protect the pants from ski edges. Both types are all weatherproof and breathable and generally work well for each sport."
