The knit material doesn't seem like it would be very warm with cotton/rayon/spandex. Is this meant to keep you warm during skiing or is it just for apres skiing?

Cotton is definitely not the best choice as a layering piece for ice cold days, so this is best for apres skiing when you are ready to wind down. I would suggest a Smartwool Thermal which will be functional and give you a nice pop of color! The Shimmer Bug by Spyder is also a great layering piece with quite a few color options.
