Closed, the organizer is about 2 inches wide to fit into any bag, you can then open it as wide or skinny as you need it.

I bought 2 of these, one for my mom and one for me. My mom carries so much stuff that when she filled this one she still had stuff leftover, and also she felt that the organizer was too constricting - meaning the items in the pockets didn't come out easily because she had the organizer too packed.
Now for me, I feel I carry a lot of stuff, however I found the organizer to be perfect. You can use it with all the pockets on the inside, or reverse it so all the pockets are on the outside. For my bag I use it with the pockets to the inside because my bag is only 3" deep. It's hard to find an organizer as wide as this with a depth of only 2" - most are 4" to 5" deep. To sum it up, I love the organizer, and am doubly pleased because since my mom doesn't like hers she gave it back to me and I now use it in my work bag.
