Wore these boots for a recent trip to Vermont. Very comfortable for walking through airport and tromping around in the snow. The top rolls down exposing sheepskin lining or your can roll them up so only the black shows. A small strap with snaps helps to hold the top in a rolled or unrolled position. I gave it a 4 instead of 5 because the insole is not removable. I wear an 8 1/2, ordered 39 and it fit well with a little extra room for thick socks.
I first got to know Rieker shoes while living in Germany; it's a good, dependable brand that is known for comfort and economy, with some fun, slightly edgy styles aimed at young (at heart) adults. Like most things Germans make, these boots are thoughtfully designed and very well made--for the price, you can't beat these in the US. Good arch support, with an insole that will eventually mold to your feet. The leather is very good quality. The wool shearling lining is comfortable, not scratchy against your skin.
Sizing tips: I found somewhere on the Internet that the calf is about 15.5 inches around. Take into account that the lining takes up some room, so I would recommend this for someone with 14.5 inch calves or smaller. (Mine are 15 inches and it was a bit of a tight fit at the top – but I was able to stretch the shaft a little bit with cardboard inserts.) I am on the short side, about 5' 3", and the shaft comes up most of the way up my calf but not all the way to my knee. This is a good height for petite people, very versatile. The shoe is a true size 38.
